Barcelona forward and The
Best nominee Lionel Messi has achieved yet another goalscoring
milestone after netting his 100th goal in European competition on
Wednesday.
Messi scored with a trademark inch-perfect free-kick in the second half of Barcelona’s comfortable 3-1 home UEFA Champions League victory over Olympiacos.
The Argentinian set up numerous other opportunities for his team-mates, before one such opening was converted by Lucas Digne as Barcelona maintained their perfect record after three matchdays.
Messi is the second player to achieve the feat after fellow The Best nominee Cristiano Ronaldo did likewise in April (113). Messi has now scored 60 group-stage goals, four more than the Portuguese.
The pair remain well clear on the all-time scorers’ list with retired Spanish great Raul netting 76 goals in continental competition.
The Best FIFA Football Awards will take place next Monday in London with Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar short-listed for the men’s award.
