The Parisians are thought to be ready to ditch Unai Emery and want Mourinho as their next manager, with the 54-year-old fanning the rumours by referring to PSG as a ‘special’ club.
Mourinho, whose current deal with the Red Devils expires in 2019, was disappointed the club failed to sign Ivan Perisic in the last transfer window, with United baulking at his £50m valuation. Meanwhile, PSG broke the transfer world record by activating Neymar’s £198m release clause, and Mourinho is fully aware that the French giants would have no trouble securing his top targets.
Mourinho has done little to quell rumours linking him with a move to Paris But now, according to Spanish newspaper Sport, United’s hierarchy will make a commitment to sign at least three so-called Galacticos – or superstar footballers that Mourinho believes can transform his team.
Atletico Madrid ace Antoine Griezmann, a target last summer, and Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale – whose injury problems could tempt president Florentino Perez to sell – are named as two of the possible three targets. Neither Griezmann nor Bale have had seasons to remember so far – the former only has two league goals, while the latter has repeatedly been on the treatment table.
There are serious fears at Real regarding Bale’s sketchy injury record this year
Nevertheless, they remain well regarded by Mourinho who is confident they could adapt seamlessly to the style of play he is trying to install at Old Trafford. In a further effort to ward off PSG’s interest, United are ready to activate a clause in Mourinho’s contract that adds an extra year to his deal, and which would double the compensation fee PSG would need to pay.
