Chelsea have made contact with Tottenham and Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld as Antonio Conte searches for defensive reinforcements before the summer window closes.
Alderweireld has become an integral player at White Hart Lane since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015, playing over 100 games for the club.
But the 28-year-old is said to have grown frustrated with his pay bracket at Spurs and is refusing to rule out the possibility of a summer move.
According to the Sunday Times, Alderweireld wants his £49,000-a-week salary to be almost doubled but Daniel Levy has so far refused to meet his demands.
When asked about his future at Tottenham at the end of last month, the star defender admitted his contract talks had stalled, telling Sky Sports: ‘No news that I know of so nothing – zero.’
It is claimed Premier League champions Chelsea are considering taking advantage of the stand-off and launching a move to bring Alderweireld to Stamford Bridge.
Conte wants Chelsea to secure deals for three of four more players before the window closes at the end of the month and Belgium international Alderweireld has emerged as a target.
The Sunday Times say Manchester City and Serie A giants Inter Milan have also registered an interest in the former Ajax star and Tottenham chairman Levy may be reluctant to do business with a direct rival.
Chelsea, who face Spurs at Wembley on Sunday afternoon, have been linked with Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk but the Dutchman is said to favour a move to Liverpool.
